Revival of Silkworm Raising and Silk Production in Deir Mama
The project addresses the need to stimulate the natural silk industry of Syria, which is of cultural and historical importance to Syrian citizens, with an eco-friendly activity that improves the local environment, helps to alleviate poverty, and economically empowers rural women. The project aims at establishing a local micro-finance fund that issues loans to families who wish to engage in any of the stages in natural silk production, from growing mulberry trees to spinning silk thread.

Policy Impact
Syria is considered one of the nations with very old silk industries; the region was already known for its silk by the first century. Syria achieved distinction in the production of textiles and flourished especially in silk production, a handicraft practiced by the Syrian people for centuries.
The main aim of this project is to draw attention to the strategic and cultural importance of the natural silk industry. this will be achieved through:
- Establishing a 'museum' for handmade silk crafts
- Organizing a national fair for handmade silk products.
-Organizing a national campaign to raise awareness on the national importance of the industry, targeting decision-makers, silk-growers and the general Syrian public

The project targets all households in the village, in particular those who have the interest and experience to undertake silkworm raising or silk production activities, including:
