Contributions to the Economic and Ecological Susteinability of Golden Grass and Buriti Handcrafits in Jalapão
Jalapão is one of the last regions where the Cerrado is well preserved in Brazil, but it is also extremely poor, with one of the lowest Humand Development Índices in the state of Tocantins. Golden grass handicrafts and buriti silk have become an important source of income for the population in the region, but growing demand for raw materials threatens sustainability of the activity. This project has the goal of acquiring further scientific knowledge about ecological sustainability of wild collection of golden grass and buriti in order to provide inputs for establishment of management techniques which can insure sustainability of the activity. Furthermore, the project seeks to contribute to associations of craftsmen and craftswomen and to the search for new markets
