Sustainable Management Plan for Medicinal Plants in the Cerrado in the Brumado Farm Legal Reserve
Sustainable Management Plan for Medicinal Plants in the Cerrado in the Brumado Farm Legal Reserve
The goal of this Project is development of a management plan for wild collection of Cerrado medicinal plants in the municipality of Goiás, state of Goiás, in private property areas. A community group organized by the Itaberaí (neighboring municipality) Health Care Pastoral will be responsible for this. Several community pharmacies have been experimentally implemented in the region, producing medication from medicinal plants for primary health care coverage for the population. On average, approximately 32 thousand people each year benefit from the community pharmacies in the region. In this context, there is much demand for the use of native Cerrado medicinal plants, as well as much pressure on natural populations. Brazil currently lacks a well-defined methodology to guide sustainable management activities for medicinal plants in native vegetation. This project is thus innovative in its attempt to come up with a proposal for sustainable management of several species in a given area of native vegetation. As specific objectives, the project also intends to implement an area for medicinal plant processing, providing better quality control and added value for production. Furthermore, results will be widely diffused, influencing development of similar projects in other regions, to the benefit of other communities. This project?s success should influence public policy promoting sustainable biodiversity use, emphasizing use of medicinal plants native to the Cerrado flora
