Protection and Conservation of Native Plant Species
Target Population/Location of project:
176 families (1,050 people) living in two villages adjacent to Mae Far Luang National Park (an Indo-Chinese sub-region and Mekhong River watershed area). Project members are farmers and laborers. Mono-cropping and cultivation of non-native species has become the norm in the project area; as a result, indigenous species and practices are dwindling. Additionally, the chemical-intensive nature of mono-cropping is affecting community health. Major stakeholders include:
? Akkha Women?s Foundation (USA)
? Association for Akkha Ecucation and Culture in Thailand
? Center for Alternative Health Education Akkha-Hari (AHA-MEC)
? Local Alternative Medicine College
? Tambol Administrative Organizations in the project area
Planned activities:
1. Confirm planned activities and results
2. Build capacity of project members
3. Collect native species
4. Propagate and plant native species
5. Carry out participatory monitoring and evaluation
Anticipated outputs:
1. Project members show increased capacity
2. 320 ha surveyed for edible and medicinal species; results compiled
3. Two ha planted with local edible species
4. 60 toxin-free edible species are conserved, and used sustainably
