Project Results
I. First progress report (November 29, 2007):
Activities undertaken:
1. Environmental rehabilitation activities launched, including--
? Compilation of natural resources inventory
? Reforestation
? Demarcation of conservation zone
? Establishment of local learning center
2. Capacity-building activities held for project members, including workshops, meetings, youth camping, and study tours
Results of activities:
1. Project members have increased environmental awareness and technical capacity
2. Six tree nurseries completed (additional 70,000 native seedlings)
Project expense:: THB 340,500 out of first disbursement of THB 332,735.27
Issues with project implementation:
? Some tree species were difficult to propagate, grew at a slow rate, and/or died. Tpo compensate the project produced an additional 2,000 seedlings per nursery.
II. Monitoring visit by NC (June 5, 2008):
On June 5, 2008, the NC paid a monitoring visit to the project.Findings and observation are as follows:
The target area , Baan (village) Khlongrua, is situated in a mountain-forest ecosystems about 40 km. from the Andaman Coast. Next to the Patoa Watershed and Conservation Management Unit, the scenery looked fairly green , even though past unregulated human activities, such as mining, logging and mono-cropping had been prevalent during the past four decades. The village is not grid connected , but depends upon solar panel. Since, the area is not a paddy cultivated land, target population has to purchase rice for daily consumption.
Two of the six established and operating nurseries were visited with thriving hundreds of seedling of native species. With technical assistance from the Unit, a systematical documentation and dissemination was in place. A contributing-to-SGP activity was witness. This was a women?s group under training on environmentally-friendly activity to generate supplementary income, supported by a major stakeholder, the Petroleum Authority of Thailand ,under its Green Globe Award programme.
It was referred that the programme approach ?symbiosis of plant? was tried 15 years ago ?after mining and logging cessation. The approach focuses on co-existence of plants of different heights within a plot- from 20 meter high down to less than a foot. This is being called ? Forest of Four Layers? in community word. Proven effective, the approach was systematically launched and disseminated.
At the time of this brief visit and friendly discussion, both technical and institutional capacity of community members were sensed. So far, they expressed satisfaction with project result and had not perceived any serious issues or problems. Besides, the village was selected to be one of the 28 villages nationwide to pilot the Royal Philosophy ? Sufficiency Economy?.
III. Second progress report (June 4, 2008):
Activities undertaken:
1. Launching rehabilitating activities : resources inventory, reforestation, reproduction, demarcation of conservation zone, and establishment of the Centre for local knowledge transfer
2. Building capacity of target population through workshops, meetings, youth camping and study tours
Results of activities:
1. Seedlings of over 30 native species being grown successfully in marginal forest area of 32 ha, with signboards telling names of species and names of responsible members
2. Emergence of computerized compiled list of 40 species
3. Increased capacity of project members on protection of watershed through integrate application of organic compost on cultivated area
Expereince, lessons learnt, problems and issues :
The project related that some project members still did not understand fully the genuine use of native species. This issue was being solved through continuous launching campaign , promoting plant propagation and re-plantation in the project ?forest garden.
Project expense::
The project report the accumulated expense of Baht: 681,000 out of the sum of two disbursement of Baht: 656,747.14.
IV. Mid-course evaluation workdhop (March 20-21, 2009)
Findings and observation:
Together with representatives from other projects of the same grant cycle (from THA/06/13 to THA/06/28), and SGP country team, the project participate in the workshop to update progress , share experience and initiate a network. It was agreed that each project would keep on contacting one another and sharing experience. Contacting addresses were distributed with one project as the coordinating centre for future activities. An NSC member who represented the National Environment Fund was also committed to help in keeping the network.
V.Completion Report ( July 22 ,2009):
Date of Participatory Evaluation( July 14, 2009)
Number of Beneficiaries/ Participating personnel:
Women: 814
Men: 408
Children: 56
Number of persons trained/ attending seminars, joining study tours:
Women: 60
Men: 72
Children: 17
Expense:
AAmount received from SGP (3 disbursements): Baht: 965,996.34
Total amount spent out of SGP budget: Baht: 965,996
Balance: Baht: 0.34
Amount authorized for the final payment: US$: 3,208.05
Amount Received from others: THB: 550,000 (in cash)
THB: 1,200,00 (in kind)
Activities undertaken:
1. Launching education forum and confirming project approach
2. Building five plots of nurseries
3. Grading plant species for replanting in cultivated area
4. Demonstrating organic farming
5. Building demonstration plots and learning centres
6. Compiling data & information, monitoring and evaluation
Results of activities:
1. Evinced increased capacity and immunity of community against prevalent mono-cash crops with self confidence on organic farming and more harmonious livelihood
2. Emergence of learning process and learning facilities on native plant species with compiled data of native plant species
3. Reclamation of cultivated area of 80 ha turning into patches of forest garden
4. Approximately 70,000 trees of 38 edible species being collected, inventoried and maintained by organic farming
Project Communication:
Nothing in special.
Experience , Lessons Learnt , Problems and Issues:
1. Monthly meetings with targeted communities could contributed a lot to a smooth project implementation. Every issue, both big and small, was addressed satisfactorily.
2. Some technical issue, such as plant genetic, was rather complex for average community members to gain insight of. This issue was addressed by inviting selected resources persons from outside to share experience.
3. By-and-large, target communities demonstrated increased environment capacity and awareness with more participatory process within the communities.
Plans and Activities for Sustainability:
1. The project would keep on the activities to ensure food security in locality , and in case of excessive capacity, distribute to nearby market.
2. The project would be more pro-active in promoting nursery of native species and reforesting , in full, cultivated area of the villages then reaching out to forest area of the Langsuan Watershed.
