Establishment of Learning Centre for Wetland Ecology
Target Population/Location of project:
1,233 people from farming and fishing families in Tambol Khuanso. (Five villages are represented.) The project is located in the vicinity of Thung Bangnokork Forest Reserve, an 80-ha associated with the Songkhla Lagoon. This area is classified as a combined coastal, marine and freshwater ecosystem of the Sundaic sub-region?s Malay Peninsula. Major stakeholders include:
? Khuanso Tambol Administrative Organization
? Songkhla Provincial Office of Natural Resources and the Environment
? Research Centre for Coastal and Marine Resources in the Lower Gulf of Thailand
? Royal Forest Department?s Forest Fire Protection Office
? Songkhla Permaculture Research Office
? Taksin University
? Prince of Songkhla University
Planned activities:
1. Compile wetland community resource inventory
2. Build nature study trail (2 meters wide, 1.5 km. long)
3. Open museum showcasing local fish species, and traditional fishing gear
4. Build project members? capacity through camping
5. Develop ?Ecology and Communities? curriculum
Anticipated outputs:
1. Increase in wetland biodiversity (birds, bees, fish)
2. Natural resources catalogued using a participatory approach
3. Project members show increased capacity by ability to sustainably use local natural resources for income generation
4. Reduction in local concentrations of Aldrin, Chlordane, DDT and Hexachlorobenzene
