Revitalizando o Cerrado no Município de Amarante do Maranhão - MA
This project will focus on capacity-building of thirty young sons and daughters of the Amarante Rural Family House associates. The municipality of Amarante is located in Southeastern Maranhão state, nest to the Bico do Papagaio region of Tocantins state. The environment in the region is under heavy pressure from forest fires to clear pastures and charcoal industries, in addition to illegal timber extraction, which generates much conflict and makes management and sustainable use of natural resources impossible, with heavy negatie impacts on local biodiversity.
The capacity-building mentioned above will be divided into five parts of eighty hours each. The parts will contain two learning modules, the first consisting of forty hours in class with technical experts and monitors and forty hours of hands on experience in communities applying the learned topics and passing them on to other community members, also monitored by technical experts. This set of ideas seeks to bring together education and alternation, the methodology of choice for the capacity-building. Meanwhile, a plant nursery will be built for production of five thousand seedlings per year and an orchid house. These activities will be part of the capacity-building. Lastly, studets will implement 30 hectares of Agroforests, one hectare per student.
The goal of the project is to reinforce ongoing sustainability experiences in the Cerrado and foster technical and organizational support for initiatives in the same genre in the municipality of Amarante, Maranhão.
