Avoiding POPs for sustainable agriculture – Development of guidelines to identify and promote alternatives as part of GEF mandate
Avoiding POPs for sustainable agriculture – Development of guidelines to identify and promote alternatives as part of GEF mandate
The goal of the project is to highlight options by documenting the barriers for the purpose of developing the guidelines for India and help practitioners of organic farming with insights on effective use of some alternatives to POPs and other important nutrients and bio-resources to strengthen non-chemical inputs. The project will also help project managers (engaged in providing institutional and financial resources for individual and community-based initiatives) with a set of guidelines. The project objectives are to develop guidelines for identifying usefulness of alternative techniques and fostering alternatives and establishment of support initiatives to ensure sustainability and focus especially on some important aspects including Integrated pest management; Nutrient augmentation, Seed dressing and Post-harvest management of produce.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Farmer-representatives of local communities participated in both workshops organised during this project. The participation of farmer-groups in terms of providing valuable information on non-chemical methods of pest management and sharing their experiences on the hurdles faced in adoption of such methods has been obtained right from the beginning of the project. Different stakeholders like the farmers, the agricultural extension officers, research scientists and government officers have been consulted in the process of documentation and consultations. Network of practitioners and managers will be formed which will help in long term use of the guidelines that will be developed.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Farmers and their families were made aware of the issue of POPs and the precautions they need to take when using pesticides and the non-toxic alternatives available to them.
