The goal of this project is to help conserve the biodiversity of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System World Heritage Site through the introduction of sustainable fishing techniques. This project makes use of lobster shade technology as a fishing method and is modeled after similar COMPACT projects carried out by the Placencia Producers Cooperative Society Ltd. titled, ?Placencia Fishermen: Traps & Shades Rehabilitation Project?, and the Monkey River Tour Guide Association titled ?Adopting Sustainable Lobster Fishing Techniques using Concrete Shades in the marine areas adjacent to Monkey River Village?.

The specific objectives of the project are to:
i) Build capacity within the local fisher community to allow them to actively participate in the management of a resource on which their livelihood depends;
ii) Introduce a responsible and sustainable fishing method that contributes to the management of marine resources in the area and;
iii) Improve the information base that is used to make management decisions for the South Water Caye Marine Reserve as part of the BBRRS-WHS.
