Restoration of the traditional use of pastures adjacent to Korgalzhin village (Establishment of a demonstration scheme for cattle breeding in terms of limited pasturing lands of dry-steppe zone for rehabilitation of the degraded pastures round the settlement)

Korgalzhyn settlement is located in a meadow-steppe zone. Population is 4684 inhabitants.
The total number of the livestock is 2562 sheep, 4920 large horned livestock.

Local people have no opportunity for usage of the remote pastures. The cattle are grazed around the settlement and this leads to strong pastures degradation. With the purpose of decreasing loading on actively used pastures it is offered to move a part of the cattle to the pastures located 20 km far from the settlement. The remote pastures are well supplied with water and have enough forage.

The purpose of the project is to create a demonstration scheme for cattle breading in terms of limited pastures of a dry-steppe zone to rehabilitate the degraded pastures adjacent to the settlement.

Expected results
Loading on pastures adjacent to the of village are decreased for 7,4 %.
Rational pastures use mechanism in terms of limited pastures of a dry-steppe zone is put into practice
300 large horned livestock and 600 sheep are moved to the remote pastures
Industrial conditions for maintenance and cattle breading (a house and 4 shelters) are created.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

A special seminar will be arranged for farmers and local authorities of neighboring districts located in the same climatic zone and having faced similar problems. A video-film about each stage of the project activity will be created to be further demonstrated for propagation of the experience gained during the project.

Capacity - Building Component

By the project completion each member of the local community will get certain knowledge about the scheme of mobile cattle breading, and necessity of pastures rotation so that they could be used on a long-term basis

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Inhabitants of the village will take active part in construction of the house, shelters for cattle, establishment of shepherd brigades, formation of mobile herd, etc. Active participation of local community members is guaranteed by their interest to get a high-grade forage for their own cattle, that will allow to improve quality and quantity of cattle at each member.

Gender Focus

Main part of involved vulnerable people will be represented by women. So, even if main part of project works will be done by me, the main beneficial from the project will be the women `s part of community

Linkages gef projects

SGP project territory is fully overlapping with GEF UNDP Full scale Wetlands project. So the idea of SGP project is in line with full scale project plans. This cooperation if showed how big and small GEF could help each other in achieving of positive results.

Notable Community Participation

Taking into account the size of Korgalzhin village, within the project just part of villagers will be involved. This group will unite the most vulnerable group of population, who cannot organize rotation grazing system, due to small amount of livestock.

The created scheme of cooperation betwen valnurable piupletiob an farmers who rpovideing grazing services is very mutual bemefoitial. tyhi is why theer is good base for project sustainablity

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project complies with local community needs, and it will allow to stop land degradation, supply local community members with livestock products thank to high-quality forage, to improve social and economic situation and to create a basis of sustainable development of the settlement. Owing to the developed scheme of long-term pastures use, members of the local community will get additional 2180 hectares of highly productive pastures.

Policy Influence

The project has demonstrated to local authorities and community members how community mobilization could be organized. Also it showed a new type to cooperation, based on mutual interest of involved parties.

Replication of project activities

The project initiated activities become very popular among local population and number of people who join the project increased from the beginning of the project almost in 2 times. So, there is the potential for project approach replication.

Project Results

Within the project was tested and implemented a new approach of cooperation, when farmers providing services for livestock grazing for vulnerable people. Also with support of scientist the rational pasture use scheme was introduced on 2000 ha and more than 100 vulnerable families benefited from it.
