Flora of Kazakhstan consists of over 5000 species, the greater part of which (more than 90%) is reproduced only thank to wild bees. Destruction of environment, sharp reduction of wild bees all over the republic may lead to loss of many wild-growing plants species.On the other hand, a large-scale development of virgin and lay lands, wide application of chemicals, annual fires have led to reduction of wild bees. And for this reason even restored natural vegetative communities need strong help of beekeepers.One bee may visit up to 4000 flowers during summer season, one bee family is capable to visit up to 69 million flowers. Increasing a number of bees will positively affect not only on conservation of wild flora, but also will promote raising productivity of cultural species. For example, pollination by bees will raise productivity of gardens for 50 %, raspberries - for 50 %, cucumbers in hothouses - up to 275 %, fodder crops -up to 100 %.

Now beekeeping in the republic faces serious difficulties. The number of beekeepers as well as beer families quality has sharply reduced.

The project contributes to conservation of biodiversity in Yigur district of Almaty area through rehabilitation of bee families of the region by establishment of the selection and breeding centre, implementation of a training programme about beekeeping for the local community, and realization of information campaign devoted to beekeeping.

The project is concentrated on increasing of the area of wild-growing grasses, trees, agricultural crops, gardens and bushes pollinated by bees; supplying beekeepers of Almaty area with highly productive queen bees to increase a number of apiaries; training of local communities adjacent to the project territory in bee-keeping; carrying out of information campaign about the project, advantage of beekeeping, etc.

Expected results
- The pollinated areas of wild-growing grasses, bushes, trees will be increased up to 1200 hectares; agricultural and commercial crops up to 1000 hectares;
-Up to 40 person will be trained in bee-keeping;
- Up to 750 bee-families will be reproduced to supply beekeepers of Almaty area with bee-queens and bee-families;
- awareness of the local population about bees and bee products will raised;
- profitableness of apiaries of Almaty area will increase

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
Farmers, having been trained in the Center, can get enough skills to organize apiary themselves. Local community members will get more information about beekeeping role in biodiversity conservation.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Information campaign that will be conducted within the project will help local people to understand importance of GS BD and identify their role in its protection
