Nyatondo Biodiversity and Wetlands Management Project.
Project Goal and Objectives.

Goal.
The goal of this project is sustainable management of biodiversity and water resources in order to improve the livelihoods of households in Nyatondo Village.

Objecticves.
1. To increase wood biomass production at the household and community levels.
2. To improve efficiency in the use of wood biomass energy resources for cooking.
3. Improve access to water resources and better management of wetlands
in the foothills of Nyangani Mountain Range.

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR
OBJECTIVE 1.
1.Establishing household and project tree nurseries.
2.Establishing household and project woodlots.
3. Planting Jatropha as live fencing around gardens and homesteads.
4.Awareness raising on the need to conserve vegetation cover.
5. Formulating and implementing by-laws on woodlands management.

Objective2.
1.Awareness raising on the use and importance of Chingwa stoves.
2.Training project members on the construction and use of chingwa stoves.
3.Constructing demonstration Chingwa stoves for pilot households.

Objective3.
1.Protecting natural springs.Instituting by-laws that protect natural springs and river heads.
2.Preventing streambank cultivation: Instbituting by-laws that protect and prevent stream bank cultivation. Afforestation along water courses.
3.Transfering water from the mountain range to degraded wetland areas. Harvesting water through constructing a weir.Constructing water storage tanks.Laying pipes that connect the weirs to the tanks. Constructing drinking troughs for cattle livestock. Watering woodlots, orchards and gardens in the wetlands.

PROJECT RESULTS
1. improved access to water for tree nurseries, woodlots and orchards
2. increased income from sell of tree seedlings, jatropha seeds and cuttings and fruits
3. improved nutrition and access to food through vegetable production and beekeeping
4.access to better cooking technology
5. reduced soil erosion and gully formation
6. improved grazing resources and systems
7. increased environmental awareness
