Reduction/Elimination of risks posed by Persistant Organic Pollutants (POPs) to the Environment and Human health in selected rural and urban communities in Zimbabwe.
1. 0 BACKGROUND
Greenviron Training Associates draws expertise from professional associates' members. Greenviron has developed persistent organic pollutants awareness material under the Phase 1 of GEF/SGP. The materials were developed in response to misuse and abuse of farm chemicals in Zimbabwe communities. Humans have been exposed to POPs through ingestion of food. This leads to cancer, neutrotic behavior changes and other effects. Information on bans or restriction have not reached everyone concerned -local pestcide dealers, health personnel, extension workers and farmers.
2.0 PROJECT GOAL, OBJECTIVES AND INTENDED RESULTS.
THE OVERALL GOAL: Is to raise awareness on the negative impact of POPs on the Environment and Human Health and disseminate alternative mature friendly technologies.
3.0 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM.
1.Improved level of public awareness on the risks of POPs to the environment and human health.
2.Adopted technologies of Soil improvement and Naturai Pest and disease control for long-term sustainable management of POPs.
3.Implement policy on reduction of POPs with relevant stakeholders.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES FOR
OBJECTIVE1:
Year 1
#raise local appreciation for risks associated with POPs.
# training in chemical safety.
#produce and print brochures and posters.
# distribution of produced material.
Year2
# training on the use of produced material.Evaluate, review and intensification on the use of developed material for POPs.
#awareness raising and program publicity to stakeholders in POPs
OBJECTIVE 2.
Year 1
# raise local appreciation and awareness of natural soil improvement technoques.
#build capacity for farmers to make plants for soil improvements (organic fertilizers).
#integrate the concept of IPM on pest and disease control (without POPs).
#setting a demonstration plot integrating the above technologies.
#exchange visits.
Year 2
#ensure compliance to natural soil improvements through monitoring and evaluation.
#ensured compliance to natural pest improvements through monitoring and evaluation.
OBJECTIVE 3.
Year 1
# stakeholder meeting for relevant authorities.
#recommendation on implementation strategies for stakeholders.
#influence the implementation of policy at local and national level.
Year 2
#intensification of the implementation and influence on strategies on the implementation of the policy.
#monitoring and evaluation on the implementation of the policy.
4.0 OUTPUTS
i) Trained communities have knowledge on risks associated with POPs
ii) Reduced rate of application and use of POPs
ii) Increased crop yields due to sustainable farming practices
iv) Increased use of new technologies especially in farming
v) Ensured compliance to use natural pest control methods
