Community-Based Mangrove Forest Rehabilitation and Management in Teluk Mengkudu District, Sergai, North Sumatera
Project Development Goal:
To manage the mangrove forest and coastal problems by increasing community participation in coastal and mangrove recovery programs to rehabilitate the ecology and social economy coastal livelihood
Project Objectives:
1. To rehabilitate mangrove forest at the Teluk Mengkudu coastal region
2. To follow up the previous coastal conservation program
3. To facilitate coastal community in increasing their income and sustainable mangrove forest management
Expected Output:
1. To reach understanding and formulating the rehabilitation and management frame for the mangrove forest
2. To reach awareness of the mangrove forest management and rehabilitation program
3. To facilitate mangrove management and rehabilitation training
4. To proceed with the mangrove management and rehabilitation implementation
5. To facilitate community organizing for the local villagers
Activities to be conducted:
1. Workshop on the mangrove issue for the villagers or community. The workshop will facilitate the community in discussing the overall planning and program implementation. (Participatory workshop for 30 villagers Bogak Besar village, Desa Bogak Besar).
2. Field study and workshops for the villagers on the coastal and mangrove preservation to Suaka Margasatwa Karang Gading, - Jaring Alus (neighbouring protected areas). This will be participated by 30 villagers of Bogak Besar village (Desa Bogak Besar)
3. Training on mangrove management for the villagers (30 villagers of Bogak Besar).
4. To plant and rehabilitate the mangrove forest and manage the overall preservation program in the village. The SPPN Sergai and the local community already planted some mangrove in 2004, this year they continue planting and rehabilitating the area with mangrove. They will plant 10.000 mangrove seeds and will work with 100 villagers divided into 5 groups.
5. To facilitate community organizing for the local villagers, through strengthening the women groups and the fishermen working groups within the villages in the Teluk Mengkudu coastal area. SPPN have been facilitating the villages nearby for the past 2 years. This program continues into strengthening the group?s capacity by community organizing through regular community meetings.
