Conservation of West Usambara Mountains through afforestation and agro forestry initiatives

Recent surveys show that the Eastern Arc Mountain Forests are severely disturbed. As a result of these disturbances, most of the endemic and near endemic species are threatened to the extent of extinction. Concerted efforts have been made by both the Government and NGOs to secure effective conservation for biodiversity within the Eastern Arc Mountain Forests.
The purpose of this project is to provide training in forestry management to farmers around Montessori Training Centre in Lushoto so that they may actively participate in the reforestation activities in and around their villages.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

1. In the course of training and field activities, the public awareness will be raised on Biodiversity Conservation.

1. Montessori Training Centre is expected to financially contribute towards implementation of the project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

1. The knowledge on tree seedlings preparations can be used as income generating by selling the tree seedlings. 2. Planting of trees on land degraded areas will improve the land and also lead to increased agricultural harvests. 3. Conservation of water sources on the other hand improves the livelihoods of the communities by getting enogh water for domsetic and other uses.

1. The project is expected to influence institutional approaches towards afforestation and agroforest at local level.

1. The project will to a great extent involve training, this creates sufficient human capital and capacites for ensured conservation of West Usambara mountains.
