Soil and Water Conservation Programme for Vuga Ward, Soni.

Vuga Ward is located in the slopes of West Usambara Mountains which forms part of the biodiversity rich Eastern Arc Mountains. Tributaries from Vuga ward contributes to Pangani river waters useful for fishing, hydroelectric power production and irrigation, however these tributaries are drying up including the Nkindoi river.
This project aims at restoration of water sources and improved land management through soil erosion control and agroforestry approaches. It will also promote conservation of Nkindoi Water Basin which is the source of livelihood in the Vuga Ward through soil erosion control and agroforestry.

1. Community capacity building is expected to be done through trainings and actual involvement in the planting of tree seedlings and trees in the patches hence knowledge and experience will be gained.

1. Through this project it is expected that livelihoods will be improved by conserving water sources hence enable fishing, irrigation and domestic use. 2. Planting of beneficail trees whereby their harvests will inturn lead to increased income at household level. 3. With the adoption of sustainable agriculture, will turn it into a profitabe undertaking and hence improved livelihoods.

Gender Focus

1. With conservation of water catchment areas, it is believed that there will be increased amount of water thus reducing women workload in search of water. 2. With palnting trees at household levels there will be a reduction of time spent in search of woodfuel , hence the reduction in women drugery.
