Establishment of school environmental clubs for environment conservation in Lushoto District
Establishment of school environmental clubs for environment conservation in Lushoto District
Land degradation has been and is still a serious problem in Usambara Mountains. Deforestation is one of the critical problems facing Lushoto Ward. The areas, which is one of the world's biodiversity hotspot is rapidly losing its resources due to continous uncontrolled high exploitation pressure and growing uncontrolled population growth. Land degradation is manifested through deforestation, overgrazing, farming encroachments to protected forests. Furthermore trees are cut down for firewood, charcoal and timber. Overgrazing and traditional shifting farming practices are key factors that degrade the environment. The project aims at establishing environmental clubs in 10 primary schools as demonstration for the community so that the communities may understand the importance of the forest resources adjacent to their villages.

The project main objective is to promote community conservation education through establishment and consolidation of environment conservation clubs in schools. This will bring about ecological effects to the project focus area.
