Community Conservation of Tanzania's Endangered marine life and habitats (at Mafia, Mkuranga, Bagamoyo, Temeke and Pangani districts)

Sea Sense, is a Tanzanian NGO is committed to protecting the coastal and marine environment for its management and poverty reduction. This Sea Sense project aims at solving the following main problems at Mafia, Mkuranga, Bagamoyo, Temeke and Pangani districts. Its main objective is to protect the endangered marine species and their habitats in Tanzania. To make sure that the marine species and their habitats are conserved, owned and managed by local communities and districts authorities enabled for the betterment of local livelihoods and global biodiversity.

Notable Community Participation

1. Communities are expected to be involved in the project processes such as participation in the community based management units processes.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

1. Public awareness will be promoted to the communities on turtle and dugong biology, status and marine habitat threats hence Biodiversity conservation of the said species.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

1. With conservation of turtles, dugongs and other marine species it is expected that the livelihoods of the local people will be improved through eco-tourism. 2. Employment opportunities will be established through activites related to protection and scientific study of turtles and dugongs.

Capacity - Building Component

1.The project aims at building the capacities of local scientists involved in the conservation of marine resources. 2. Local communities will be trained on status and threats of marine and coastal species and habitat conservation and management.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The local participants of this project willbe the natives of the areas in question namely Mafia, Mkuranga, Bagamoyo, Temeke and Pangani districts.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

To ensure that the project objectives are met,the proponent has included other partners who will support the project these are WWF, Born Free Foundation (UK); other partners are Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute, Marine Parks and Reserves Unit,Faculty of Aquatic Sciences abd Texhnology (FAST) of the University of Dar es Salaam,Proffessor Adelaide Semesi Memorial Trust (PAKS) ,WWF Rufiji-Mafia-Kilwa Seascape Project and the Local coastal communities.
