The Laulii Rainforest Reserve: Nature Trail Development - Phase 1
1. The village of Laulii has a freehold land of approximately two thousand acre (2,000 acre) of its inlands ? a strip of land that starts from about half kilometer from the coastline on lowland forests and stretching to upland forests to the ridge of Upolu island (Refer to Attachment A Map 2). Authority over the use of this land is with the Laulii Chiefs or Council of Chiefs.
2. The whole area covers two watercatchments lying east and west of the village with steep ridges which run along the the catchments river systems parallel to each other from the top of Upolu island to the sea.
3. The Village Council of Chiefs and community of Laulii have agreed to establish a Forest Reserve on this land, and they need the required capacities to properly develop and manage this entity. They view this as an important opportunity for the conservation of valuable biodiversity; the protection of water resources; and the development of appropriate alternative income generation activities - such as effective eco-tour ventures for the benefit of their community. *****PROJECT UPDATE: The Laulii Project is currently under execution. The MOA Amendment is completed with signature by community and UNDP RR. We are now waiting for UNOPS to process the release of second disbursement, it is scheduled to be in Jan but its now Feb 08.*****
