Community Conversion to Organic Farming - Titikaveka Growers Association, Cook Islands
4. Project brief description: Sustainable agriculture & reduction in release of POPs
4 (a) Objectives: (1) to reduce and eventually even eliminate chemical applications, so that the runoff of agricultural chemicals into our lagoon declines; (2) to educate farmers to use natural composting techniques, so that the soils improve and the resulting rich biota replaces any application of fertilizer, thus retaining moisture, encouraging the plants natural protection from pests; (3) enhancing food nutrition; and, (4) eliminating exposure to POP toxins by farmers and consumers.
