Promoting Sustainable Jatropha Farming in Kwale District.
Project intends to cultivate the drought tolerant oil tree Jatropha curcas in the form of the jatropha system on farm and buffer zone around traditional forests ("kayas") to produce primarily oil as an alternative to kerosine and wood fuel for the local communities.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The crude jatropha oil can be used for lighting and cooking. As its viscosity is up to 30 times higher than paraffin available energy devices need to be modified. The project designed lamps and cooker for competitive prices which can run on jatropha oil. The oil will be used by the target communities who can save up to Kshs 25,200 in a year (current average paraffin consumption per week and household 3.5 liter, current costs for paraffin Kshs 150/liter). The surplus of oil can be sold by the target communities for Kshs 60 per liter. As the tree is introduced in form of the ?jatropha-system? (hedges) the on-farm productivity of food crops will be increased as: a) the tree is poisonous therefore not browsed by animals protecting the crops, b) it reduces soil erosion by slowing down surface run-off water helping it to infiltrate into the ground, c) it creates a positive micro-climate.
Gender Focus
The most vulnerable in regards of exposure to indoor air pollution sicknesses are children and women. Jatropha oil is smokeless and has the potential to decrease the amount of indoor air pollution related sicknesses drastically. Moreover women don't have to spend valuable time for the search of firewood and children are able to study longer in the evening due to the availability of jatropha oil for lighting purposes.
