Organic Seedling Cultivation with less abled people and Bio Control in Barbados.
This project targets caregivers of less abled people who often live close to or below the poverty line because of their inability to go out to work caused by the demands of 24/7 care giving. The project creates an alliance between organic farmers and these caregivers in a business enterprise where the caregivers produce organic seedlings and sell them to designated farmers. The project also has a significant research component in which the grantee will attempt to discover new bio- chemicals for use on organic farms in Barbados. Any new bio-chemicals discovered will be patented.
The goal of the project is to ?demonstrate the use of organic farming methods in households and the use of biological control in Barbados". The objectives are to:
(i) "establish a network of micro enterprises which produce organic seedlings for sale to farmers;
(ii) research and produce biocides from local resources for use on organic farms; and
(iii) prepare a business plan for the establishment of a micro enterprise system among caregivers of less abled people".
It is expected by the end of the project there will be a growing enterprise of 17 caregivers in an organic seedling production enterprise and the discovery of some new biochemicals which have been patented.
