Rain water harvesting and tree planting project, Monduli . .

Monduli district is located on the windward side of Mt Kilimanjaro , thus it is very dry and water shortage is their major problem. The inhabitants of Monduli are pastoralists and they move from one place to onothr looking for water and pasture for thier animals. The proponets of this project is an NGO working to help communities members in Longido which is part of Monduli district to participate in prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and Environmental Conservation. The NGO has witnessed the problems which is faced by people who are helping HIV/AIDS patients without water. The project is requesting funds to establish rainwater harvesting project which will construct the rainwater harvesting tanks at hospitals and school in order to access water to help the sick people.The project will also plant trees at schools and open ares as the area is very windy.
The rainwater harvesting tanks at schools will provide water to improve the cleaning and sanitation at schools.

Notable Community Participation

1. Communities will participate in the project by providing manpower in the collection of seedlings, manure, sand and the tree planting exercise.

1. Improved hygiene and environmental sanitation in schools and hospitals will contribute towards improved living conditions of the beneficiaries.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

1. Public awareness will be promoted on land degradation and biodiversity conservation as tree planting wil contribute in combating land degradation and enhance biodiversity conservation.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

1. The project will significantly involve the Maasai as the indegenous people.

Gender Focus

1. The project will support and improve the condition of the HIV infected people both male and female. Schools with childrens will also be considered by the project.

Capacity - Building Component

1. The training of local technicians on rainwater harvesting technology will increase human capital in the area and will be usefull in case of a need to replicate the project in the neighbourhood. 2. Environmetal conservation education will build the capacity of the NGO and the communities involved.

1.Community will contribue their manpower instead of cash in the accomplishment of the project.

The project has been replicated by other organization dealing with health issues as a means to combat water shortage related deseases in Mondul District.

Project sustainability

The project has trained community members as local artisans who will continue with the construction of the rainwater harvesting tanks in other areas in Longido.

Project Results

(1) The project has contributed to increased access to safe water at schools and dispensaries where water was a major problem.
(2) The project has aslo contributed in tree planting in schools where wind have been affecting school buildings. The schools and dispensaries have water in both dry and rain seasons.
