Reversing degradation of natural resources on Mount Kilimanjaro Ecosystem through tree based livelihood options.
The Mount Kilimanjaro inhabitants ( the Chagga) are known for their local skills in maintaining traditional agroforestry systems over years. However, the sustainability of this system is threatened du eto growing population pressure, failures of the coffee industry and fast changing social- economic dynamics. Due to this economic changes the outcome has been encroachment on the forest leading to environmental degradation and fast growing poverty rates.
The project objective is to increase income and create alternative livelihood opportunities for communities living in the 1000-1700m above sea level zone so as to reduce pressure on protected areas and reverse natural resources degradation in Mount Kilimanjaro Ecosystem.
