Drilling a water borehole and solar pump installation for Mailisita Vocation Training Centre.

Mailisita Vocational Training Centre is experiencing water shortage as well as high water bill. By drilling a water borehole it is expected that the center will use the water they will drill to irrigate small gardens around the centre to increase its income (since the borehole is a more reliable source of water for the centre).Solar power will be used to pump the water.

The centre will further contribute to youths self employment through trainings they acquire at the centre, thus contribute to reduction in illegal activities on Mount Kilimanjaro natural forest.

The project objectives include to use solar as a source of energy for pumping water, to minimize the costs of the water and to have reliable water source and to create source of income for the centre from garden activities.

1. The centre is involved in training the youths on life skills and other self-employment activities.

1. The centre provides equal opportunity to youths of both gender.However women near the centre will have reduced walking distance in search of domestic water.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

1. The public will have awareness raised on the use of solar power to pump water hence reduction in green house gases leading to climate change , which would otherwise be used by conventional fuel pumped machines.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

1. With availability of water horticultural activities are expected to contribute to sustainable improvement of livelihoods. 2. It is obvious that water supports hygience and environmental sanitation hence improved livelihood.

1.The policies on climate change area may be influenced at local and national levels to allow more people to use the technology.

Replication of project activities

More Institutions are using solar energy rather than diesel and electricity in water pumping and ligthening.

Project sustainability

The sustainability of this project lies on the training the staff received on operation and maintanance of solar equipments. The project will be sustained from the serving from water bill and earnings from irrigation and animal husbandry activities.

Project Results

- The Project has contributed in improving the training at mailisita vocational training as ther is more income from irrigation and animal husbandry activities.
- The use of sola pump has reduced the costs of operating the cente, this will attrct more girls to join the center which will reduce the un employed number in the community near the center.
- the project has demonstrated the use of solar as a clean and cheap energy and thus more are copping the use of solar technology.
