Sustainable organic farming and rabbit rearing at St. Paul's Primary School
Sustainable organic farming and rabbit rearing at St. Paul's Primary School
This project combines rabbit rearing with vegetable production which is then linked to teaching, curriculum development, nutrition of children (healthy eating) and micro business enterprise. Students, teaches and parents will engage in a process of establishing hutches, caring for rabbits, cultivating vegetables; harvesting and preparation of healthy foods; and sale of surplus to a local supermarket.. In addition the entire process will be used for teaching general science, mathematics, agricultural science, and nutrition.

The goal of the project is to "demonstrate an integrated and a sustainable approach to organic farming in land scarce conditions in an urban environment".

The objectives are to:

(i) "adapt and demonstrate how organic farming methods can be utilised in urban areas where land space is limited;

(ii) link the school curriculum to practical experiences in which students acquire skills in research and team work;

(iii) improve the heath of students by increasing the dietary intake of vegetables and lean meat, by teaching nutrition education and conducting a pre-and-post KAP (Knowledge, Attitude, and Practises) study; and

(iv) create a demonstration project for the community and other schools as a means of education and project replication.

By the end of the project it is expected that Barbados will have the first integrated school organic farming project with several linkages.
