Coastal Transplantation to Increase Community Awareness for Coral Reefs in Small Island, Galang District Batam, Riau Isles
The coral reef surrounding Batam island is pretty much damage following the increase of land erodded due to land recclamation in big islands. Other treads are fish-bombing, reef stealing, fish poaching and other damaging fishery.
Project Goals:
Main goal:
To preserve coral reef for the benefit of small island community welfare in Galang sub-district, Batam.
Specific goals:
1. Understanding the importance of coral reef for livelihood (ecology, economy and socially);
2. To promote an environment friendly job opportunity in a product-based and service-based within the island;
3. To increase capacity and intitution in managing the coastal area with the local community;
4. knowledge management or documentation (including: lesson learn) during the program.
Activities:
Pre condition and socialization
1. To implement program socialization, consultation and coordination with community in Abang and Petong island;
2. to facilitate two location discution within the Pulau Abang municipality to discuss coral reef and the problems, and;
3. To design planning detail.
Coral reef transplantation
1. Training to grow transplant;
2. Decision on transplant farm location and artificial reef;
3. 3D map designing;
4. Artificial reef building;
5. Basic diving training;
6. Community organizing on biodiversity monitoring and designing monitoring modul;
7. Coral planting and coral adoption implementation;
8. To monitor transplant health;
9. Compilation, analysis, and reporting, and;
10. Acknowledgement of coastal management area, institution as organizer and community patrolling system.
Eco Tourism Development
1. Training on entrepeneurship and bussiness management;
2. Training on eco tourism (a. ecoguide, b. acomodation, dan c. food and beverage);
3. Designing business plan, and;
4. To facilitate working capital (using revolving fund technique)
Knowledge documentation
1. Documentary production for community activity;
2. Publication with leaflet and poster, and;
3. Distribution of information or lesson learn, with meetings in neighboring village
Expected Output:
1. Community aware of the direct and indirect benefits from the coral reef transplantation program (male/female, youth and children)
2. Community workplan on coastal management
3. Demonstration plot for coral transplant and artificial reef
4. Management of coral reef preservation and education tourism; coral transplant through coral adoption program, education-tourism development in artificial reef spots, ecolodge, and souvenirs.
5. To build a routine community patrolling system and community biodiversity monitoring in the area
6. Achieving local-policy draft on the environment management zone.
7. Knowledge management documentation with audio visual media and printing.
