Combating desertification and improving green cover at Fakeha Al Ain village
I. BACKGROUND
Fakeha ? Al Ain is part of the marginalized villages in North Bekaa. The village was well known for its rich biodiversity. Before the nineties the agricultural lands were mostly used for planting opium. Since the abolition of this cultivation, the inhabitants have been suffering from poverty. The area lacks income generating projects. Since that time people started to cut trees in the forest for fuel wood and grazing.
II. OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
This Project focuses on fighting land degradation. It aims at re-greening the village through 4 main activities:
5. planting forage trees
6. planting forest trees
7. planting fruit trees
8. planting forage herbs.
By achieving these objectives, the shepherd will have more forage. The poor farmer will be able to benefit from fruit trees.
This Project will address urgent needs. The Project is in line with the governmental Project on combating desertification.
Youngsters working in agriculture and herds owners will participate in the Project. This will create for them income generating activities. The community and key people will be participating in different phases of the Project.
The SGP is funding the first year of the Project.
