Conservation of the Watershed of the Gaddadehi Attha Reservoir by Sri Lanka Samaja Sanwardana Pushthakala Ayathanaya

This project will introduce soil conservation methods to the area, educating the community on soil conservation laws and proper management of the watershed in the area. Currently there is an insufficient irrigational infrastructure in the area. The project intends to activate an effect land management system and better agricultural methodology in relations to the highlands.

SLSSPA will train 332 families, making them aware of sustainable land management and on how to conserve local natural resources. The grantee organization will also encourage organic farming to further minimize land mismanagement.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Awarenes Programme included in the Project Contains material on global environment. Audio visual presentations are used in passing the necessary information and data towards the target community in this regard.

Capacity - Building Component

The awareness building on the relevant issues and practical training on the steps to be followed and practiced for the purpose of avoiding bad practices which may cause soil degradation and on organic farming.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project manager appointed on his or her eligibility to handle participatory methodology, and the CBO committee members will act as a tender board and will undertake all the procurement activities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The re - constructed Higurugamuwa, Gadadehiatta Wewa (Irrigational Tank), provides water for all the paddy fields sufficiently:the steps taken to promote the soil condition of the area, other than the paddy fields which are utilized for vegetable growing too, minimized the land degradation which in turn, supported sustainable livelyhoods, as well.

Gender Focus

The women's percentage of the whole of adult population, in this village, is higher than of than of their male counterparts, as it was suveyed upon; the number of women headed single parenthood families is unusually high due to the political turmoil existing.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

These villagers are a community who had been far from being with food security. and remotest in the sense from the modernity. All these people activity participate in the project activity with awareness they gained.

Policy Impact

They become a community with an useful awareness on the environment; land degradation minimized. this will bring in short and long term impacts for betterment.

Notable Community Participation

Threr are 350 families in Hingurugamuwa Village. 97% are farmer Families. All the famer and non- farmer families directly support this Project. Whole the famer families are members of 'Hingurugamuwa Farmers Society" Which is registered as a community Based Organization under the Agrarian Services Department.
