Butrinti Park is a unique combination of history and nature. Nestling in the highlands in the far south of the country and surrounded by dense vegetation Butrinti was to become one of the major maritime and commercial centers of the Ancient World reaching the height of its glory in the fourth century B.C., at which time the city numbered 10,000 inhabitants.
Today this place attracts an ever-increasing number of tourists coming mostly in daytrips from different cruise ships from Corfu Island. The tourist presence creates a potential market for traditional handicrafts and other typical local products. Homemade soap made of olive oil is a natural complement to the typical Mediterranean landscape of the area and could provide a source of income for the families living in the park and surrounding areas. The knowledge about soap making and the awareness of this niche market is missing in the local communities and this project through this demonstration aims at bringing this information into the community.
