REHABILITATION OF OLKOLILI VILLAGE IN HAI DISTRICT.

Olkolili village is situated in Hai District near Kilimanjaro International Aitport in an area which is very dry. The area is occupied by pastoralist and has very strong winds, the area is also affected by wind soil erosion. The village experience strong wind destructions where by roof of schools and houses are frequent taken away by wind.
The main objective of this project is to conserve the area througth tree planting.The project will plant indigenous tree as well as other trees. The project expect the planted trees will reduce the effect of strong winds and wind soil erosion.
The project will conduct seminar on environmental conservation to the pastoralist so that the planted trees will not be destroyed by cattles.

The matured trees will be of a long trem benefit to the villagers in the sorrounding area as they will reduce the costs of repairing their schools and houses.

The project has involved women in ttrinings and also in tree planting activities.In pastoralist societies few women participates in general meetings.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

This village is inhabitade mostly by Maasai who indigenous in the area and they will participate in the environmental conservation seminar and in tree planting activities. They will also participate i protection of the planted trees from being demaged by cows.

Capacity - Building Component

environmental conservation education will be provided to villagers to enable the vilagers to manage the harsh conditions in their village.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

the trees planted in this area will improve agriculture as well as pastorallism due to the improved vegetation,flora and fauna.

Notable Community Participation

villagers and students of secondary and primary schools will participated in tree planting activities

Project Results

The project result will be increased number of tree in the area which will reduce the effect of strong wind as the Maasai who were indigenous in this area but migrate several times in a year are now settled. These people will benefit from the forest and tree product.

The project has provided envirnemental conservation to pastoralist and they will be involved in protection of planted trees.

The project will plant trees around schools which will reduce the destruction caused by wind to schools. and to the villager houses.

The project will envolve retired forest officer in the management of the project.
