Promotion of Traditional Knowledge on Crop Protection against pest, insects and diseases for sustainable agriculture practices.

The objectives of the project are to document available traditional knowledge on crop protection against erosion and disappearance and Sensitize the stakeholders through awareness and training for practice of traditional knowledge in agriculture and also for promotion of innovation and creativity based upon traditional knowledge. Demonstration of appropriate use of traditional knowledge will be done to avoid misappropriation, distortion and other prejudicial action to protect and conserve biological cultural diversity. people friendly IEC materials will be developed and disseminated and commercially valuable traditional knowledge will be explored to the development of commercial products or processes.

Project Characteristics and Results

Replication of project activities

. community consultation has been carried out as regular activity for field level activity like cultivation of native variety of paddy with traditional practices harvesting , vermicomposting , duckery and poultry , marketing of produce etc. . 68 nos of SHG and 4 nos of farmers club are so far being identified and involved in the project activities.Out of this 50 nos of SHG have been able to get loan from Nationalized bank and regional rural bank. . Introduction of poultry activity among SHG members in the project villages. . Training to SHG members on kitchen garden Training. . Three nos of general awareness on ill effect of chemical pesticides and fertilizers were organized in project villages during the reporting quarter. More than 200 participants were covered under this program. . Training for demonstration on preparation of traditional knowledge based pest control substance was organized. . 35 nos of farmers from project villages participated n the program . Traditional organic farming practitioner from village chandkuchi was invited as resource person to conduct the program. . Low cost marketing facilities.

Capacity - Building Component

New SHGs will be formed under the planning grant keeping in mind the gender equity issues. Extensive training on collection, conservation and documentation of the traditional agricultural practices will be planned with the SHG members. The trainings will be planned for the full grant. 240 SHG's and 3 Farmers Club have been formed. Community consultation has been completed in 4 villages. 5 traditional land management abd cropping cycle methods have been recorded.

Project sustainability

New SHGs will be formed under the project keeping in mind the gender equity issues. Since the materials available are low cost, hence the project will sustain. The project at the end may be linked to sustainable livelihood.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project proposes to explore traditional knowledge in many villages and experimental demonstration will be done in 1 village during the planning grant stage where the IPR issue would be clearly addressed. Technology transfer and application linked with sustainable livellihoods may be proposed in the second phase.

Notable Community Participation

The project would initiate with a survey to collect background information of villages and the observation of farming activities in different seasons with community participation. This will followed by data analysis and report preparation. The reports thus prepared will be shared with the villagers in village meetings for micro-planning.

Project Results

. In the planning phase, a model of the technology to be shown to the villagers before doing the training programme and application. Documentation, communication and sensitization of the findings to be focused in the planning stage and on successful completion of the planning phase, technology transfer and application may be proposed in the second phase.
. Out of 68 SHG involved in the project. 54 SHG have been able to get credit from bank.
. 17 nos farmers constructed low cost vermicomposting pits and started production of organic manure.They have been able to harvest on the average 50 kg of compost per month from their respective pits.
. SHG members provided with improved variety of duck and poultry have been able to earn income from the sale of eggs nad table bird. On an average each beneficiary has been able to earn Rs. 500/- to 1000/- per month.
. Customer demand for native variety of rice is found to be very high as it has been observed that after giving marketing trial of native variety of rice , customer still enquiring the project holder about the products.
From the awareness and training organized in the project villages , it is observed that the use of chemical pesticide and fertilizer reduced significantly.
. We still cannot establish the marketing shade in an organized way . still it is a short fall for us.
. These years 50 nos of farmers started cultivation of native variety of paddy (joha , boka and barni ) in about 7 acres of land.
. Five nos of traditional pest control substance have been prepared and products have been used by farmers from project village with effective results.
. Although cost involvement in preparation of traditional knowledge based pest control substance is low but collection and processing of different medicinal herbs and toxic plants become time consuming.
. Farmers believe that the vegetable grown with traditional practices would not have good looking which may not attract the customers.
