Addressing Water quality Issues in the Pitons Management Area World Heritage Site, Soufriere. Saint Lucia.
The project will establish a monitoring system to determine the water quality and its impact on coastal ecosystems in Soufriere. It will also take action to reduce point source pollution while educating the community about the hazards of water pollution.
By the end of the project it is expected that a water quality monitoring system will be established and functioning and data will be compiled and analysed on a regular basis. Furthermore, it is expected that sources of pollution will be identified and action taken to reduce pollution especially from the local pig farmers.
There are four major project activities:
1. The establishment of a water quality monitoring system for Soufriere
2. The establishment of a Biogas Digester Demonstration Site (Partner with one local pig farmer located a long the Soufriere River Bank to construct a biogas digester and utilise the resulting biogas for conversion to electricity or as an alternative source of fuel).
3. Develop and implement an Environmental Health Awareness Campaign
4. Legislative Advocacy: Sensitise relevant ministers and members of local government to the need for protection laws, and encourage local government and relevant ministries to develop effluent standards for St. Lucia and as well as a strategy to implement and enforce them.
