Offsetting Carbon Dioxide Emissions by Creating Carbon Sinks and Alternative Livelihoods in Barbados.
This project aims to encourage visitors arriving in Barbados to offset their carbon emissions by planting trees in various locations across Barbados. The project will also provide an opportunity for young people to be sensitized to climate change issues and to be trained in customer relations, tree planting, green house management, first aid, negotiations, and marketing. In order for this project to succeed, partnerships will be created with Government as well as the private and public sectors. Private landowners will also be engaged in this process.
The objectives of the project are to:
? To raise the awareness of climate change issues among citizens, visitors and young people;
? To offset CO2 emissions from the aviation industry through the creation of carbon sinks; and
? To instil a sense of responsibility in the youth by enabling them to see themselves as agents of change making a positive impact on this existing problem.
The project is expected to have the following outcomes:
? Increased knowledge and understanding of anthropogenic causes of climate change (particularly relation to aviation), its impacts, and the role of individuals and organisations in adaptation/mitigation amongst locals and visitors.
? Reduced Net CO2 emissions generated by Barbados (in this case, indirectly)
? Young people are actively engaged in mechanisms geared towards addressing climate change and greenhouse gas emissions in Barbados.
? Groups of young people gainfully employed and contributing to their society
