Restoring Incomes from Beekeeping by promoting bee biodiversity and sustainable agro-forestry in semi-arid ecosystems of Antigua.
Restoring Incomes from Beekeeping by promoting bee biodiversity and sustainable agro-forestry in semi-arid ecosystems of Antigua.
Noting the reduction in population of the European Honey Bee due to the varroa mite and further noting the decline in production of several fruits and vegetables which need pollinators, the project seeks to promote the use of local species of bees for honey production and pollination. The objectives of the project are to:

(i) reduce the dependence on the European Honeybee by developing community management of at least one species of native bee for pollination and honey production;

(ii) develop the capacity of both men and women apiculturist in the use of local species of bees; and

(iii) reduce the destruction of local species of trees used for foraging.

The project has several components including research, education and training, policy, and technological adaptation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The focus of the education programme will be on Bees as honey producers and pollinators. The need to protect local species of trees will also be a critical element of the message.
