Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
It is envisaged that by the end of 2008, these trained trainers and youth will be in the position to create their own livelihood opportunities in the arenas of tourism, game counting, anti- poaching and nature conservation / biodiversity promotion, which would be utilized on six San Farms, as well as in the adjacent Transfrontier Park. The senior and master trackers and field guides would be in a good position to help with the management of !Ae !hia (Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park) and to enter into partnerships with South African National Parks on indigenous models of conservation. Also the broader San and neighbouring communities in the area will have obtained a higher level of consciousness about biodiversity issues which will be manifested in their subscription to appropriate land use plan
Notable Community Participation
SASI enters into contractual relationships with the Communal Property Associations- CPA's of the respective communities in which the development support provided to the communities are defined. These agreements are received on a regular basis with the leadership structures and a close relationship exists between the SASI and the community leadership structures. Each community has representation on the SASI Board of Trustees which is responsible for determining the strategic direction of the organisation. SASI is also regarded by these communities as the lead development NGO. The majority of SASI staff - 90% drawn from the communities
