This project aims to enable local communities in Vhembe District, Limpopo, to protect areas of vital cultural and ecological significance through community processes that recuperate and strengthen traditional knowledge and governance practises regarding sustsinable livelihood options and sound natural resource management, and to catalyze learning and best practice in other provinces.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Awareness raising will take place through the publication of leaflets aimed at local stakeholders, video documentation and biodiversity festivals, which include a cross section of the local community from schools to elders and local government and are reported on in local and national press. Targeted advocacy and lobbying work and engagement will also raise awareness.

The project includes capacity development in that communities will be trained in participatory processes such as resource mapping, dialogue, communal planning, diversified livelihood options, and improved intergenerational learning

Policy Impact

This project is in line with South Africa's existing commiment to the CBD (ratified in 1995) and demonstrated through the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 2004 (Act 10 of 2004) (NEMBA), the National Environmental Managwment: Protected Areas Act, 2003 (Act 57 of 2003). The project will also feed into the ongoing process of developing the Natioal Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), as well as help to fulfil the goals of the Limpopo Environmental Implementation Plan and the recommendation of the Limpopo State of the Environment Report (2003)

Notable Community Participation

the project feedss into the Limpopo IDP objectives by creating community forums that encourage inter-sectoral palnning and paricipation with the community, tribal authorities and local government. The project also seeks to work with other NGOs and govermental institutions in the area, in order zto maximize impact and synergy

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

the project has emerged following a long period of engagement (over 4 years) with the communities in Limpopo province. Over the last year consultation with target communities has yielded a plan of action and commiment from local chiefs concerned.
