Practical protection of biological diversity through active participation of local community

The endemic type of fern ?Osmunda regalis? unique in Macedonia can be found in the vicinity of Novo Selo. The project aims to created conditions for sustainable development of the community around the protected areas by protecting and preserving the areas where fern can be found and at the same time by utilizing the interest of tourist and visitors to generate bigger economic revenues for local population. This will be achieved by educating the local population of significant of the endemic fern, mapping the area with the location of fern, printing map/brochure, marking paths and creating visiting spots with benches for visitors.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

20 information board consisting of map/ area, catalogue of floral species and local products and map of the region Sets of wood inventory (15 tables, 30 benches, 35 litter boxes and 1200 m2 fence) were prepared and placed The project and project results was recorded and presented on the Macedonian National TV (series smart Projects, 11/06/2009).

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Project sustainability

The Civic Association Utro jointly with the local population of Novo Selo and the Local Municipality Novo Selo intend to continue with organising similar activities in the future by promoting that sustainable use of natural resources can generate income for local population.

The project activities were the starting point for initiation of the process of gradually introducing and promoting rural sustainable tourism.
