Biogas Upscaling- Renewable Alternative energy promotion project
Biogas Upscaling- Renewable Alternative energy promotion project
The Kathuna Dairy Farmers Cooperative began the project to promote the use of biogas for household energy (ie, lighting and cooking) as an alternative for petroleum and firewood which they have used for generations. This will has enabled them to reduce the demand for wood extracted from the Mt Kenya forest. Seventy households will benefit in this project.
The community will practice zero grazing systems, raise livestock pasture in their farms which will help keep livestock out of the forest. This is good for re-afforestation efforts which are currently being undertaken by local communities on the degraded areas.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
As part of the biogas installations, community members will be educated about the benefits of the use of biogas as a much cleaner source energy as opposed to more traditional fuels such as firewood and kerosene. The use of cleaner fuels such as biogas helps to mitigate climate change.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project targets dairy farmers who maintain cattle, which are used as a source of milk for income generation. The waste products from the cattle (i.e., dung and urine) serve as inputs for the biogas units. Thus the project will help make the dairy farming activities a more attractive and sustainable enterprise by also providing a source of clean, renewable energy.
