Pet Plastic- Let?s not allow plastic to outlive the humans
Project Description
The project aimed to reduce the quantities of POPs by creating conditions for sustainable management of municipal PET plastic waste in the North-eastern region of Macedonia. The following activities were planned:
? Analyzing the situation with PET plastic in the North-eastern region of Macedonia and informing and motivating citizen to start with PET selection.
? Improvement of infrastructure for collection and selection of waste PET bottles in the North-eastern region of Macedonia
? Organized collection and treatment of plastic municipal waste in the North-eastern part of Macedonia
Project achievements
? Creation of a network of 13 PET waste collection points with employment of local personnel. With covering the whole region, those collection points distributed the plastic waste to the central collection point in the village of Slegovo.
? Medium size truck was purchased and was used for collection and transportation of the plastic waste.
? By joint involvement and cooperation between the Local Municipality of Kratovo, Public waste enterprises and NGOs, the management of plastic waste in the Local community and the region was changed. From this aspect, improved and increased cooperation between the civil sector and local authorities in solving problems of common local interest can be considered as a results.
? Developed and enhanced cooperation with the NGO RCOR (project partner and cofounder), who succeeded to generate two projects with complementary activities (the International Finance Corporation - IFC and the Foundation Open Society Institute Macedonia? FOSIM).
? Through production of project leaflets, conducting public survey, and distributing T-shirts and cotton bags, the NGO promoted the project activities and raised public awareness.
Follow up
? Registered and launched sister company within the NGO Soncev Rid Rajkovac, legal subject for all procedures for trade and commerce of PET plastic waste.
? Cooperation with Recycling Project PET, funded by USAID (United States Agency for international Development) and establishment of umbrella association PETRA (http://www.plasticrecycling.org.mk/en/petra/petra), with objective to unite all organizations that are active in plastic recycling at the national level, to promote and lobby for the concept of primary selection of secondary plastic waste, to facilitate the recycling of PET, and to assist in the development of final recycled materials.
