Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The crude jatropha oil can be used for lighting and cooking. As its viscosity is up to 30 times higher than paraffin available energy devices need to be modified. The project designed lamps and cooker for competitive prices which can run on jatropha oil. The oil will be used by the target communities who can save up to Kshs 25,200 in a year (current average paraffin consumption per week and household 3.5 liter, current costs for paraffin Kshs 150/liter). The surplus of oil can be sold by the target communities for Kshs 60 per liter.
Gender Focus
The most vulnerable in regards of indoor air pollution sicknesses are children and women. Jatropha oil is smokeless and has the potential to decrease the amount of indoor air pollution related sicknesses drastically. Moreover women don't have to spend valuable time for the search of firewood and children are able to study longer in the evening due to the availability of jatropha oil for lighting purposes.
