ENHANCING FOREST CONSERVATION IN ULUGURU MOUNTAINS THROUGH TREE PLANTING AND CULTURAL APPROACH IN KINOLE WARD, MOROGORO RURAL DISTRICT.
Description The Uluguru Mountain Forests form a key part of the Eastern Arc mt. forests.he Ulugurus are critical for the livelihoods of the rural and urban population of Morogoro, Coast and Dar es Salaam regions. They are the main sources of water, provided fuelwood and ameliorate localclimate for higher agricultural production.The Ulugurus are home to various species of flora and fauna. Up to three plants are endemic with several others are sub-endemic. In the past, the forests remained mostly less desturbed because of ethnic Leader who was known as the Chief of Waluguru used cultural approach to preserve the pristine forests. Unsustainable harvesting of forests began when people from other ethnic groups migrated to the Uluguru Mountains. Today the Uluguru forests are facing a host of threats that include: Illigal hunting, pit -sawing, bush fires and encroachment for agriculture. The government has taken a number of measures to adress this threat. As a result of these measures, meaningful achievements have been registered. It is now suggested that conventional control mechanism be complimented with cultural measeures to restore the heritage of these control mechnism be complimented with cultural measures to restore the heritage of these unique Uluguru Mountain Forests. Therefore, this project aims at strengthening the conventional measures that are already in place and revive cultural conservation approaches in order to save the forests from disappearing. The main project objective therefore , is to promote sutainable management of natural resources and environment in Uluguru Mountains by using indigenous knowledge and cultural approaches.

It is expected that the project will establish a Uluguru cultural information centre will be collecting some fee thus income generation. This will ensure sustainability of the centre.
