Implementation of Chemical Conventions at Grassroots Level.

According to the studies done, it has been discovered that , in some locations in Tanzania there are POP stockpiles. Further due to ignorance the local community continue to make use of some products containing the POPs recklessly like using transformer oil for skin lightening, hence a need for this project.

Also there is a need of raising awareness on the Chemical Conventions of which Tanzania as a country is a signatory.

The project greatly deals with capacity building and awareness creating on the Chemical Conventions in particular dealing with Persistent Organic Pollutants. This is to be done to grassroot level community and the NGOs, CBOs and CSOs.

Project main objective is therefore to foster wider awareness and understanding on the Stockholm Convention and other Chemical Conventions in order to avoid damage to people's health and environment.

Alterantive pesticides are likely to reduce the costs as compared to those of the chemicals.

The project support sustainable livelihoods as it will help the community realise the health hazards that may be associated with the chemicals under consideration, so avoid them and hence protect their health.

The project will be of benefit to both men and women and the public at large in avoiding reckless use of POP containing products.

Policy Impact

The project will bring the Conventions to the local level hence implementation of country policies (in relation to the conventions) at local levels.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project will raise public awareness on the Chemical Conventions and in particular Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.

Notable Community Participation

The project will train grassroot farmers and peasants on community monitoring hence their participation. The established community monitoring group will participate in project monitoring especially on the unintentional produced POPs in human, biota and media in areas with potential identified sources.

Capacity - Building Component

Upon raising the CBOs, NGOs and CSOs awareness on the Chemical Conventions, their capacities will be built in this particular area and so assist in the implementation of these conventions.

Project Results

Awareness on POPs raised to over 100 local farmers. Through these farmers, it is anticipated that over 1000 more farmers will be reached.
