Reducing the pasture degradation on the territory of Margun village by establishing wind brick fences and demonstration of the efficiency of solar devices for food preparation for the local shepherds.

The territory of the major part of the Margun ayul okmotu belongs to the dry climat regions. There are few rainfall during the year and if there are any they take place in the winter and spring time. Also there is an overgrazing that increases the level of erosion in this area. The grass cover doesn't have an opportunity to recover due to the overgrazing and the dry climate. Also there is a problem of mass forest cutting to heat the houses. Animals cannot live in such an environment. Since the ecosystem is changing many types of flora and fauna started to dissappear. The Margun Kungoi NGO has outlined several ways to solve the current environmental problems. The overgrazing and the tree cuttings should be taken into control.

1. Conducting seminars, trainings and round tables (to educate the rational pasture utilization and land degradation prevention skills)

Policy Influence

By the resolution of the local government the Committee for pasture management was organized.

Project sustainability

Organization of the Committee for pasture management consisting of 11 person and pasture control, as well as planting of saplings and other project activities have long-term plans.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The decrease of land degradation and erosion level on this territory will help to project the more sustainable livelihood for the households whose primary resources are land and animals. Also the benefits from solar devices will help to reduce the expenses on electricity.

Capacity - Building Component

The local population is going to acquire knowledge about the importance of the wind brick constructions from saxaul. Also about the ecological and economical benefits from the solar devices. They are going to learn how to operate this devices and assist in constructing wind brick constructions.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The public awareness is going to be increased in the scope of th information campaign.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The solar devices, wind brick constructions and research conducted can be considered as inovative mechnisms.

Notable Community Participation

There are currently 11 families involved in this project. Members of the NGO have talked to the people from their villages and have disseminated the information on the scope of the project. The skilled members of the NGO have conducted a research on the field and have processed some of the data.

Gender Focus

There is no special gender focus but women are members of NGO and also their life will be easier with the introduction of the solar devices.

Project Results

According to the Memorandum of Agreement CBO "Margun Kungey" has carried out following activities:
4 seminars and workshops, 2 round tables, meetings with indigenous people and local government were conducted, where were discussed pasture problems and significance of using alternative energy resources. 5 sets of solar heating devices have been purchased, demonstrated and installed. By the local government's request one solar water heater was installed in the local hospital. For wind break measures the saplings of almond-trees, pistachio-trees, saxaul have been planted in 30 hectare. Pasture patrol with appropriate uniform was organized. Three times explorations in degraded lands with involving of the experts on ecology from the local NGOs, local forestry agency were carried out.
Information boards were developed and installed in appropriate places. 500 booklets, 400 maps, calendars explaining project activities and benefits of using solar heating devices were published. With involving of specialists and journalists, 4 video spots were shooted.
