Tirupati Eco City Women Action for Sustainable Sanitation and Environment Management

The purpose of the project is to replicate MESMICA (Model Eco System Management Involving Community in Action) project supported by UNDP-SGP implemented at Tirupati and consolidate the achievements on a sustainable basis involving women members of Livelihood and Ecological Security Groups.(LES Group)
Goal of the project is to reduce, recycle and reuse munciple solid waste and achieve climate change mitigation, contain land degradation and reduce persistent organic pollutants in air, soil and water.
A systematic process for Solid Waste Management with the following components is envisaged in this project.
1. Identification of the Area and Community.
2. Creation of Stakeholder Groups.
3. Meeting with Residential Groups.
4. Formation of a Associations and awareness on this subject.
5. Recruitment of Rag Pickers/Waste Retrievers called ?Parishuddhatha Vahakaru? meaning cleanliness facilitators (called Safai Mitra?s in Hindi)
6. Disposal of waste into hand carts.
7. Recycling using the facility and sending the remains to kabadiwalas.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Small street plays, formation and strengthening of RWAs, involvement of colleges, schools, clean drives etc will be done. Pamphlets, banners have been used extensively.

Replication of project activities

The present TECWASSEM is replication of MESMICA supported by UNDP GEF SGP and this project involving more components, participation with effective back and front end connectivity can be replicated elsewhere with for ease and ensured results.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The program will facilitate wet waste conversion to vermin compost and dry waste modifications into useful products through plastic weaving and handmade papermaking is in the process to augment the incomes of the rag pickers.

Project sustainability

The project brings out a mechanism for reduction in municipal spending and aquiring of land filling sites. The payment by the polluter or the waste generators ensures reasonable income to the waste collectors at door steps. The Eco-friendly products like compost, plastic and paper products also generate income which ensures all the players to earn sufficiently.

Gender Focus

The recycling of waste will be done with the involvement of the women rag pickers and by mobilizing them into Self Help Groups. These groups will be trained and linked with formal bank credits.

Notable Community Participation

This project is hundred percent community based project. The women SHGs/Livelihood and Ecological Security Groups and other association have commion interests. The community is paying for door to door collection and large scale marketing of the produces the community is got involved. The community is playing the role in fund contribution, decision making, and management of the affairs, planning, execution and implementation and finally the ownership also goes to the community.

Project Results

1. Adoption of Solid Waste Management by various groups, Municipality and Government takes place. The same thing has happened for the earlier MESMICA project and this renewed action will give more scope for the same.
2. Selection of Tirupati by Eco City Agencies by GTZ-ASEM and Ministry for furtherance of the concept.
3. Resident regular payment to the rag pickers.
4. Visible source separation methods opted by residents.
5. Reduction in littering, careless handling of wastes.
6. Streets free from garbade accumulation, disturbance and stray dogs etc.
7. Adoption of farmers for organic farming in large scale.
8. The disadvantage sections of society get more and more employement opportunity.
9. Availability of Eco friendly products produced by the stakeholders shall be exposed to the visiting public and the livelihood options for the local poor communities will increase.
