Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
In a poor area, with high unemployment due to the closing up of the mining activities, the project supported the locals to develop alternative income generation activities based on the biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of its resources. In this respect a Collection Center for the local products (figs, mushrooms, medicinal plants) was established. An existing space (owned by the local public administration) was rehabilitated and an installation for drying fruits, plants and vegetables was acquired.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
The Svinita community belongs to a disadvantaged category first because they are in a remote, isolated area, second because they belong to an etnic minority (Serbian) and third because this a was a monoindustrial area (minning) and this activity was dramatically reduced generating a great number of unemployed persons. 40 locals participate in the training activities; 300 persons are involved in the development of the income generation activities; 1,000 persons participate in the information, identification and prioritization of the local needs process.
