Project main purpose: to establish and implement an ecological and sustainable pasture management system in the Remetea village, as a model for other regions facing similar problems.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

150 persons (both of Romanian and Hungarian nationality) are involved in the development, and public debate of the Sustainable Management Plan and Grazing Regulation developed within the project. 120 persons attending the meetings organized for project launching and results presentation. 1700 households apply traditional management techniques on their lands.

Policy Influence

A Sustainable Management Plan for 2610 ha of degraded grasslands and Grazing Regulation were developed within the project, and adopted by the local authority.

Replication of project activities

The Sustainable Management Plan and the Grazing Regulation can be adapted and replicated in any other area with similar geographic and biodiversity conditions.

Capacity - Building Component

The information and consulting activities of the project (3 sessions) will contribute to the capacity building of the local community to identify the environmental problems and to adopt the appropriate measures for their solving. The two Associations of grasslands owners and the local authority will have, at the end of the project, enhanced capacity to cooperate and establish partnerships in the benefit of the local community.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information sessions and the promotion materials (1,000 copies) raise awareness of the local population on the environmental problems existing at local level and their effect on global level. The importance of the biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of the natural resources are also emphasised.

Notable Community Participation

The owners of grasslands from Remetea village, grouped on two Associations, are participating in the project activities. They are also co-financing the project with 38,613 USD in cash and 2588 USD in kind. The Mayoralty of Remetea is also partner and co-financer of the project.

Policy Impact

The project developed, with the active support of project?s partners, two important local regulations regarding the management and the use of the most important natural resource in the area: the wooded grasslands. A local Sustainable Management Plan for 2610ha of degraded grassland and the Grazing Regulation. These documents were adopted by the local authorities

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The sustainable use of the grasslands will improve the livelihoods of the local community. The project contributes to this by establishing two demonstration plots, were the traditional integrated management techniques are revitalised, providing the locals with replicable models.

Project sustainability

The two Associations of grasslands owners will continue to sustainably manage the lands. The local authority will support the implementation of the Sustainable Management Plan and the Toplita Forest District will secure the observance of the Grazing Regulation.

Gender Focus

The women are encouraged to participate in the project activities. They are part of project implementation team, support the organization and attend the public information meetings, volunteer in the practical works related to springs rehabilitation.

Project Results

1. 1000 information materials printed and distributed.
2. 23 springs rehabilitated and 60 troughs arranged to be used for animals' water.
3. 600 ha of degraded grasslands rehabilitated
4. 2610 ha of grassland sustainably managed
5. 2 demonstration plots arranged for revitalization of the traditional techniques for grassland management.
6. Project activities promoted through local and national television: Realitatea TV, Pro TV, Antena 1, Radio Romania, Radio Targu Mures, Radio Antena Satelor.
