The Ovitoto Environmental Community Outreach Centre ( Eco-C)
The Ovitoto ECO-C is a two-year project, with the funding for phase one in completion. Thus, the first objective was met, with an Environmental Community Outreach Centre established. Phase II would seek to promote sustainable land management techniques focusing on livestock and grazing management in relation to available water resources. It would aim to train a farming representative from each village in natural resource management with cultural relevance to Herero practices of livestock and land management, which would encourage each village in the community to practise sensitive farming.
Project Objectives:
?To promote the use of appropriate technology in the 19 villages of the Ovitoto area, through the establishment of an Environmental Community Outreach Centre.
?To increase the awareness, knowledge, and access on a number of appropriate technologies and environmental management concepts.
?To encourage the establishment of local ?environmentally focused? businesses and in particular to identify business opportunities that would support the wider environmental goals of the emerging Ovitoto Communal Conservancy.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
A minimum of 30 individuals, trained through Phase I, will initiate appropriate technology businesses such tso tso stove manufacturing, shack insulation, vegetable gardening, otji-toilet manufacturing and solar powered initiatives.
38 village ECO-officers, two from each village, will be trained for mobilisation and awareness on energy efficiency and conservation, as well as demonstrate the benefits of appropriate technology.
Information and monitoring strategies will be target maximum outreach to the farmers association.
500 school children in Okandira will benefit from awareness activities conducted by the ECO-C project at regular intervals.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
The Traditional Authority, under the leadership of the Chief, will benefit from the project.
