Rehabilitation of degraded landscapes and topsoil
Shashubay settlement is located near to the Balkhash lake. Population is 2000 people, mainly dealing with fishery and stock farming. 10 years ago the green plantations round and on the settlement territory were about 5K square m. Now they are greatly reduced, mainly due to felling, water supply system destruction and cattle over-grazing. As a result, the degradation processes have seized on the territory over 3K square m. The free top-soil is widely spread out by the wind, soil erosion becomes more progressive. To prevent the land degradation processes the project has been developed.

Project aim:
To prevent the topsoil and to rehabilitate the local landscapes round Shashubay settlement through restoration of green plantations on the territory of 5K square m, reconstruction of the water supply system on the project territory and realization of information campaign to involve the local community into the land degradation preventive actions.

Project tasks:
- Restoration of green plantations on the territory of 5K square m
- Reconstruction of the water supply system on the project territory
- Realization of information campaign to involve the local community into the land degradation preventive actions

Project results:
- Rehabilitated irrigation ditch for 1,5 km;
- Reconditioned irrigation water supply system for 600 m;
- 600 saplings of maple, poplar, oleaster and elm are planted of the territory of 5K square m,
All the above measures will contribute to conservation of the landscapes and topsoil on the territory of 5000 5K square m., and to prevention of soil and flue dust escape;
- The environmental protection activity of the local community increased
