Empowering local communities to manage their own environment and resources
The project seeks to control and manage the invader trees ? Prosopis species in the Erongo Region, especially in the Daures Constituency. These invader trees have largely populated the area along the Omaruru River, and are increasingly reducing the grazing area on which the rural communities depend for farming to sustain their livelihood.
The project is proposing to embark on a controlled yet widespread cutting down of the Prosopis trees along the Omaruru River in the Daures Constituency. Benefits include:
?Prosopis trees may yield durable timber that can be used to manufacture furniture, floor tiles and other useful household appliances.
?Trees can be used as charcoal and wood chip products. The other possibility is to explore electricity generation by introducing fire power plant.
?The peels/seeds can be harvested as fodder for animals since they contain high protein.
